Most people know that a dermatologist specialises in the skin, but what is a cosmetic dermatologist? A cosmetic dermatologist specialises in the aesthetics of the skin. Cosmetic dermatologists also treat medical skin problems, such as acne and dermatitis that also improve the appearance of the skin.

High Demand for Cosmetic Dermatology

Cosmetic dermatologists are highly in demand today. With an extraordinary range of tools in their kit the results achieved today are far beyond what we would even have seen 20 years ago. Much of this is due to the increasing professionalism of the sector, plus the technological advancements such as lasers.

With a focus on the cosmetic aspect of the skin, cosmetic dermatology goes further than superficial skin care. The field has become increasingly medicalised with proven medical treatments being included in the treatment regime to achieve the best results.

In Australia, the Australian Society of Cosmetic Dermatologists (ASCD) is the society provide education and training activities under the Skin Health Institute Inc (SHI), with individual affiliation (members) open to all Australian and New Zealand registered dermatologists and dermatology trainees.
